A common misconception is that a person is either a “born salesperson” or they’re not. The truth is that anyone with a desire for a career in sales can be taught the skill of selling.

Prior experience in sales or in a real estate related field is helpful to the new licensee, but it is definitely not a requirement. Training in sales can be readily obtained through classes and seminars provided by brokers and real estate schools.

Most salespeople in the real estate industry work as independent contractors for a licensed broker. 
Compensation is usually in the form of a commission on their sales that is a percentage of the total amount paid to the broker. Another benefit is the flexible work schedule that real estate salespeople enjoy.

Personal qualities are highly valued in real estate sales. The salesperson should have a pleasing personality, a reputation for honesty and a neat appearance. Personal organization is important and, if not already possessed, should be a skill acquired early in the salesperson’s career.
